Country town symbols

This was just an old building I liked in the caravan park.  But while we were in Tenterfield I was musing about country town symbols - things you see in country towns but see not so often in the city.  Here was the list I made while looking around Tenterfield

  • Country outfitters (RM Williams excluded)
  • Foodworks, IGA and more recently Spar supermarkets
  • Big old pepperina trees
  • Tree lined avenues forming an entrance to the town
  • CWA Restrooms
  • A local newspaper office, usually no longer operating
  • Pastures Protection Board office or similar
  • Agricultural supplies and machinery
  • A Stihl outliet with big Stihl chainsaw mounted on the roof or a pole
  • Grain silos
  • An art deco picture theatre usually closed
  • Men and women wearing cowboy hats
What would you add to this list?

  1. ... a genuine old cafe with formica table tops where you can get a mixed grill that includes kidneys!
(I just love The Tenterfield Star building - what a hive of activity that must have been in its day)

    1. Yeh that is a good one, but I don't think I have ever had a mixed grill that included kidneys.

  2. great building. And most country towns have an unused Train station :(

  3. A REAL country bakery, of course!!! Not part of a chain, or with city sized portions - but with local specialties you can't get anywhere else!

    1. And cream buns, especially in Queensland where they use fake cream which I like better than the real stuff in a cream bun.

      Good addition to the list.

  4. Now I am mystified. I received a comment via email from Jo But where did her comment go it should have turned up here.

Her additiona of an unused railway station is just so obvious how on earth did I miss putting it on the list!

    Thanks Jo.

  5. Yes, an unusd railway station had occurred to me. How about a WW1 memorial? How about a set of sale yards?

I, too, love the Tenterfield Star building, especially the sign, which appears to have been maintained to some extent. Does Tenterfield still have a saddler?

    1. When I look more closely, The Star could now be a private residence ...or did you say that already ...

Windy August

Tumbleweed It was August (known to be a windy month of the year) and it was blowing a gale.  Tumbleweeds hurtled across our path, pressed forward by the busy wind. While I was photographing the tumbleweed, I braved the icy blast to find a few more tiny flowers and fruits by the roadside.

Big sky country 3

The Pinnacles, Broken Hill Clear blue sky is very dull!  But there is something of interest in the image.  These odd shaped mountains appear on the skyline just outside the city. I had planned otherwise for my closing sky today.  On a hill outside town there are wonderful sandstone sculptures which I saw the last time I was here. I planned to photograph them against the setting sun but we left our run too late, so you don’t get to see them until our return journey.
