Is that a Coolibah tree beside the abandoned house? Every Australian knows about Coolibah trees because the bush ballad Waltzing Matilda is nigh on our unoffical national anthem but most of us live nowhere near the inland where they grow. Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, Under the shade of a Coolibah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled, You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me. Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
"To muse, to creep, to halt at will, to gaze ... such sweet wayfaring"
William Wordsworth
A lovely misty morning - I never knew these trees were pepperinas and have always referred to them as pepper trees.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad speaks with great affection of the Pepperina trees of his childhood in his little country town (Leyburn).
ReplyDeleteI always thought they were weeping willows! I guess they're not...
ReplyDeleteI had pepper trees growing up, too. We used the little berries as bullets to flick at the boys.
