Black Cockatoo

Bourke is a fascinating place and because it was the weekend I managed to get out and about more than in other towns.  I even managed a little bit of bird spotting.  This one is a red tailed black cockatoo.  This tree was full of them and I tried ever so hard to get a shot of their red tail feathers that fan out when they fly.  I had a similar lack of success in capturing a good image of the eagle that was soaring in the blue sky.

  1. Gorgeous close-up of the cockatoo, Joan. I love its glossy black feathers, and the tiny white spots on the head and shoulders, like a cape.

  2. This is a super shot even without the red tail feathers showing. You can see little white speckles, which I didn't know they had.

  4. It is a great shot Joan. Don't know if I have ever seen one of these but we have lots of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo's about with their mournful cries.

  8. another fabulous photo. I was only in the kitchen this morning and heard a bird noise and said to my husband " they are black cockatoos, what are they doing here?" But I wasn't fast enough to get the camera out. I am enjoying your trip and especially the bird life.

Windy August

Tumbleweed It was August (known to be a windy month of the year) and it was blowing a gale.  Tumbleweeds hurtled across our path, pressed forward by the busy wind. While I was photographing the tumbleweed, I braved the icy blast to find a few more tiny flowers and fruits by the roadside.

Big sky country 3

The Pinnacles, Broken Hill Clear blue sky is very dull!  But there is something of interest in the image.  These odd shaped mountains appear on the skyline just outside the city. I had planned otherwise for my closing sky today.  On a hill outside town there are wonderful sandstone sculptures which I saw the last time I was here. I planned to photograph them against the setting sun but we left our run too late, so you don’t get to see them until our return journey.
