Gill Street, Charters Towers - A Road that Beckons

I picked Gill Street because we had at last left the sea and fish dinners.  It is also the main street of the city with many impressive buildings showing the historic wealth of this city.

This one made me smile.  How long is it since Ansett Airlines closed down?

Hey that is another country town symbol for my list -- Target country stores.

The Northern Miner lives on ... I saw a copy in one of the cafes.

  1. Thanks for a trip down memory lane Joan. I lived in Charters Towers for a couple of years back in the 70's. I am glad to see the heritage buildings are still beautifully preserved.

    1. Linley, it would have been a nice town to live in think. Not too big, not too small and not too far from the sea.

  3. Well.....this isn't what I expected Charters Towers to look like. I thought it was going to be more Mt Isa'ery.

To be quite honest, I don't know exactly where CT is! Google Maps here I come.

  4. Looks like a great town to visit. And the wealth from mining keeps coming for this town, for the moment anyway.

    1. It is interesting to see just how reliant we are on mining ... it becomes obvious when we get out near it.

    1. I was surprised to see how many there were. I actually had not expectations whatsoever for this town ... It was just a case of let's go see what it has to offer.

Windy August

Tumbleweed It was August (known to be a windy month of the year) and it was blowing a gale.  Tumbleweeds hurtled across our path, pressed forward by the busy wind. While I was photographing the tumbleweed, I braved the icy blast to find a few more tiny flowers and fruits by the roadside.

Big sky country 3

The Pinnacles, Broken Hill Clear blue sky is very dull!  But there is something of interest in the image.  These odd shaped mountains appear on the skyline just outside the city. I had planned otherwise for my closing sky today.  On a hill outside town there are wonderful sandstone sculptures which I saw the last time I was here. I planned to photograph them against the setting sun but we left our run too late, so you don’t get to see them until our return journey.
